Music awards are a big thing. They give us a glimpse of what the music is going to be like in the future, and it allows us to cheer for our favorite composers, songwriters, singers and bands. I used to sit in front pf the TV with my sister and we would bet on the winners of various award shows.
The popularity of music awards has not declined in the slightest in the past few years (with one or two exceptions), and online betting is still a nice way to spice up the award shows. Some are based on the opinion of music experts, while others rely heavily on how popular the music and the artists are with the general public. Here are the top music awards in 2019.
The Tony Awards
Fans of musicals will be able to enjoy the most amazing show on June 9, because that’s when the Tonys are scheduled. They will be broadcast live on CBS and it is worth noting that this is the 73rd time we will be able to see top Broadway stars. In 2018, most awards were awarded to the team behind “The Band’s Visit”, while special awards were handed out to Bruce Springsteen for his “Springsteen on Broadway” and Andrew Lloyd Webber (of course) for the outstanding achievements in his career.
Billboard Music Awards
This award has been around since 1990, with a small break between 2006 and 2011. These awards are not based on critical judgment of the performance by a committee or a panel of judges. Rather, the awards use the data from the sales, social engagement (meet-and-greets, charity projects, and twitter wars), touring and others in order to come up with the best in the business.
Ed Sheeran dominated the 2018 awards, winning both the award for the top artist and the top male artist. His song, “Shape of You” was the top radio song, as well. The best group was Imagine Dragons, and the best-selling song was “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber.
The Grammy Award
The Recording Academy presents this award to those with remarkable achievements in the music industry. The award is a small, gold-colored gramophone statue. There have been many changes to the ceremony over the years, like categories being added and subtracted. In 2018, the viewership was the lowest in last five years, but we hope the 2019 awards will up the stakes. The Album of the Year and the Record of the Year went to Bruno Mars for “24K Magic”. Best Pop Solo Performance went to Ed Sheeran for “Shape of You”. Childish Gambino is one of the favorites for 2019, with his controversial hit “This Is America”.
American Music Awards
Last spot on our list, but definitely not the least, goes to AMAs. They were created by Dick Clark as a way to provide some healthy competition to the Grammys. The awards are based on the public opinion. They feature awards like Artist of the Year, New Artist of the Year, Favorite Male and Female Artist (in various genres), and many more.
It is held every autumn, and the winners of 2018 did not disappoint. The Artist of the Year went to Taylor Swift, as did the Tour of the Year. Camila Cabello won the award for the New Artist of the Year, as well as the Best Collaboration and the Favorite Music Video with her colab with Young Thug on the song “Havana”. In 2019 we expect great things from Drake, Ariana Grande, and Post Malone, though some believe Cardi B will turn a few heads as well.
